The Death Penalty Shouldn’t Be Abolished

Should we abolish the death penalty? Now this question becomes a hot issue not only in news or political debate shows but also in our normal life. There are many people who want to abolish the death penalty. Those people think we shouldn’t ignore the human right of the criminals, and most developed countries have already abolished the death penalty. People can agree or disagree with this issue, but in my opinion, the death penalty shouldn’t be abolished.

First, many people think all human beings have the right to live, including criminals, and they think that taking away their life is very cruel. They think killing someone is cruel. How about those victims? Don’t they have the right to live? Those criminals must have committed a serious crime so they were punished with the death penalty, so I think this punishment can’t be too cruel to them, because they have done much crueler things to the victims.

Second, most criminals may not stay in jail forever because if they have good behavior, they may be released on parole, but no one can ensure that they will not do same things again. According to the research, the rate of criminals who are discharged from prison and commit a crime again is 44%. And there is a serious problem that some criminals stay in jail for a long time, so it is hard for them to adapt to the new society.

Third, I think abolishing the death penalty may increase the crime rate because those criminals may think no matter what they do, they will be released in the end. This thought is applied to the countries with high crime rate, such as Philippines and South Korea. Both of these countries’ criminal rates have increased after they abolish the death penalty.

In brief, all criminals should pay for the thing they did, and it is fair for them to receive capital punishment. To prevent criminals from committing crimes again and not to waste a lot of money  taking care of criminals, the death penalty should be allowed to exist.
