Should people be allowed to eat on the MRT?

Neytiri

Currently, almost all the MRTs and subways have substantive regulations stipulating that people cannot eat on the carriage. If a person breaks the rule, he or she would be fined for the breach of the law. Although the rule has been carried out for a long time, quite a few people still think it's inhuman. They state that people can eat on the train and the plane, and are entitled to eat anywhere and they think it more convenient if people are allowed to eat on the MRT. The reasons seem sensible, but others strongly disagree. As far as I'm concerned, people shouldn't be allowed to eat on the MRT as it may exert unsatisfactory influence on the carriage' cleanness, the city's appearance and people's health.

Firstly, eating on the MRT will make the carriage dirty and damage the clean environment. There are only a few trash cans and cleaners on the MRT. If people can eat on the carriage, they are likely to produce garbage and food leftovers. Some people even leave the bin-liners and beverage bottles on the seats, which not only makes the carriage look like a refuse dump, but also leads to cockroaches and mice.

Secondly, eating on the MRT may influence others and leave a bad impression on people, especially tourists. The MRT plays a significant role in city transportation. It's also a major aspect by which some tourists judge a city. Not all food has pleasant odor. Once someone eats something that has awful smell, the whole carriage will be permeated with it, which will irritate passengers. Even worse, the drinks may spill, wetting and dirtying the seat and the floor. I think if a visitor has such unpleasant experience, he or she may not want to come to this city again.

Thirdly, eating on the MRT is not good for people's health. In spite of the fact that eating on the MRT is convenient, it may do harm to people's health. For one thing, eating on moving carriages is not good for digestion. Sometimes, carriages are so shaky that people are easily choked by their food, especially for those without seats. For example, if the MRT brakes suddenly while one is eating candied gourd, the bamboo skewer is likely to hurt that person or others. In order to avoid such dreadful accidents, it's essential to forbid people to eat on the MRT.

All in all, prohibiting people from eating on the carriage will have many favorable effects on both passengers and the environment. Therefore, I hold the view that people should obey the rule and not eat on the MRT. I believe that once people understand the importance of this regulation, they will abide by the rule willingly and gladly.
