My Good Baby Companions

Rosanne

Every summer and winter vacation, since I am a student, I’d always take part-time jobs to both earn some money and kill the time. However, this winter, I unexpectedly got a night-time job. Though it provided a well-paid salary, I had got so much daytime with nothing to do. Just as I thought I would be killed by the dullness and the coldness, Grandma came in time to rescue me—along with my two little sweet twin nephew and niece, Sugar and Honey.

The twins are both four years old, and they live in Taipei. Only when there are long holidays would my sister bring them back to the hometown. This time, because the Chinese New Year was coming soon within the winter vacation, Grandma took them back beforehand, and they first came over to be our little guests for a couple of weeks.

Probably due to living in the big city, these two babies are not shy at all; from the moment they came in, our house was filled with their loud greetings and giggles. Although they are twins, they look totally different—Sugar takes after the father, and Honey the mother. Besides, they are so cute that I just couldn’t take my eyes off them. I really couldn’t, for they are so active and energetic. They jumped the stairs, climbed the sofas, and ran all over the rooms until they blushed rosy red and heated up the house. Even when they were bored, they would follow closely after me and see if I could find something new for them.

It is very interesting to look after Sugar and Honey. Although they were born at the same time, the same place, and live under the same roof, their personalities are quite different. Sugar, the little boy, is curious about everything. He could ask “Why?” time after time until he had no more questions. Moreover, he’d always show as if he were the big brother—although they are at the same age—and he should protect his little sister from any harm. He would never make Honey cry; whenever he found a new toy, he would not be stingy with it. In addition, they have a great sense of understanding; they played games and competed with each other, but they would never fight for such things.

Honey, with two dimples in her rosy cheeks, smiles just like a doll. She is a thoughtful little baby, rather simple and kind-hearted. Looking at her big eyes, I could see her character of tolerance. However, she is every sticky, and she would never want to be left alone. Stories are her favorite; she’d always ask me to tell the same old one—The Aunt Tiger—and she would never get bored listening to it. Also, she’d always do some silly things, such as dropping things carelessly or falling down on the ground by accident. When she did so, I would hug her in my breast and called her “silly girl,” and then she herself would say, “It’s ok!”

For almost three weeks, these two babies got me out of bed every morning. We read newspapers together, played together, ate together, and watched TV together. I was so pleased with their pleasant company. They taught me to play the games I had already forgotten; they refreshed me with their energy of innocence—they are my good baby companions.
