The Gap Between the Rich and the Poor

Felicia Chan

In recent years, the gap between the rich and the poor is growing wider. Because of the income gaps between the rich and the poor are large, many problems are appearing one by one. This situation is hard to control, only getting more and more serious. The result of tax changes makes the rich even richer, the poor even poorer. The uneven distribution of wealth leads to three major consequences: endangering social stability and safety, wasting the social resources, and increasing crime rate.

Social instability and insecurity are related to the unstable economic system. In the book Fault Lines, the writer points out that stagnated income and income gap were two main causes of financial crisis in 2008 in America. Thus, the disadvantaged groups demonstrated in the street for defending their rights. Apparently, financial condition plays an important role in our society.

When the government formulated a regulation such as a tax policy on different social strata, it might waste the social resources seriously. Take an example. The government established some special emergency program for those who are in need. Such program is even applied to the people who don’t need the help. On the other hand, those who really need it might not be able to get the financial assistance. This type of waste of the social resources remains unresolved.

Under the circumstances of increasing unemployment rate, the crime rate rises. These two problems are closely related. When people can’t provide themselves a stable condition and the government can’t help them, they might resort to cheating and stealing. The government does not seem to be able to deal with the problem of rising crime rate.

The gap between the rich and the poor is impossible to vanish. But we can find out the method to reduce it. The problems of social instability and insecurity, waste of social resources and rising crime rate may be mitigated with right measures. It’s not only the government’s business; every one of us needs to make a contribution.
