Losing My Wallet in France

Avery

For many people, a wallet or a purse is something precious that carries valuables. Like everybody, I use my wallet to keep personal things such as cash and credit cards. I value my wallet because it is where I keep money for use any time. A wallet acts like a safe in my everyday life because it helps me store those valuables and carry them with ease. Losing a wallet is the worst thing that changes my day. I was good at taking care of my wallet until recently when I lost it on a particular day. I felt so depressed about the loss.

Last summer, I went with my family for a one-week holiday in France. At the beginning of this trip, the tour guide warned us many times that there were many pickpockets around tourists. My parents and I paid attention to people around us at every culture hot spot. We did not bring the backpack either because we knew it could give pickpockets chances to steal our belongings. Everything went quite well until the third day when we first had free time.

When the tour guide dismissed us, we went to Champs Elysees for shopping. It was a sunny day with gentle breeze so we enjoyed the tour a lot. After we were tired, we decided to find a place to eat something. However, the coffee shops there were too fancy for us. Searching for a while, we went into McDonald’s to take a rest. As soon as I sat on the chair, I opened my bag to find a tissue to wipe the table and put it behind my back with the zip open. I did not realize that an open bag out of my sight could be in so much danger. After I ate my burger, I put my bag on the table to find my phone. Suddenly, I was panic because my wallet was gone.

I checked my bag with tremulous hands; however, I just could not find it. I tried to calm down and accepted the fact after I realized my wallet had been stolen. My parents were also shocked by the situation. I looked around trying to figure out how my wallet was stolen. There was a hole in the middle of the back of the chair I sat on. I supposed the thief took my wallet from the bag through the hole. I regretted leaving my bag out of my sight. However, no matter how regretful I was, I had no choice but to accept the fact. The only thing that could make me feel better was that the wallet had only one hundred EUR in it.

I had never lost a wallet before and the experience was rather distressing. I was lucky that I put most of my money in another purse, but its loss has taught me a lesson for keeping the wallet well and taking care of it. Not only the wallet but also valuable things such as phones are what we need to pay a great deal of attention to. After this experience, I have been trying to become watchful for the surroundings and responsible to myself. I hope this is the first time and also the last time I lost my wallet.
