Is it good for Chinese Culture University students to ride a motorcycle to school?

Evan Chuang

It is convenient for college students to ride a motorcycle to school. However, students who study at Chinese Culture University would face three problems if they ride the motorcycle to school: gas fee is expensive; it is dangerous to ride on Yangde Avenue, and it is hard to find a parking space.

First, gas fee is more expensive than that for students in other colleges. If we do not live near the school, one way for us to commute is to ride the motorcycle to school. From Jiantan MRT Station to our school the distance is 12.1 kilometers in total. Now, the gas fee for one kilometer is NT0.77 dollars. That is, we will spend NT18.6 dollars one day. For one week we will spend NT130.4 dollars. For one month the gas fee is NT512.8 dollars. For a long time, we will spend a lot of money on the transportation. If we want to save money on the transportation, I think that is not a good choice for us.

Second, it is dangerous to ride on Yangde Avenue because there are many sharp turns on the road. Sometimes we cannot see the approaching buses, cars, or hikers. Yangde Avenue is a two-way traffic zone and the lane is narrow. We do not have enough space to pass another car or overtake it when in an emergency situation. In the peak time we will meet more people, more vehicles, and also more motorcyclists. The risk is increasing at that time, which is rather dangerous. On Yangde Avenue many car accidents happened and many motorcyclists were hurt or even killed. To protect ourselves from traffic accidents, avoiding riding a motorcycle to school is a sensible decision.

Finally, it is very hard to find a parking space on or near campus. About ten thousand students study at Chinese Culture University, so the parking space is not enough for all the student riders. Usually, it takes me almost ten minutes to find a parking space. There are two parking lots on campus. If I cannot find a parking space in the first parking lot I must go to the second parking lot. Sometimes I must move someone else’s motorcycle so that I can have enough space to park my motorcycle. Thus, I cannot get to the class in time just because I have spent too much time looking for a parking space for my motorcycle!

In my opinion, for Chinese Culture University students, riding a motorcycle is not convenient and not a good choice of transportation. To get to the school safely and go to classes on time, I think we had better take the bus to school.
