My Favorite Instrument

Albert Lin

My favorite instrument is the acoustic guitar. I see it as an inanimate companion that gives me a second chance in life. It all began when I saw my brother playing his acoustic guitar. I was considering adapting a productive hobby at that time. With my intense desire and the temptation nearby, I chose the acoustic guitar and took some lessons. However, my feeling for the instrument was still plain. My view for the acoustic guitar changed when I joined the guitar club in senior high school. The club members encouraged me to participate in their activities, such as field trips and stage performances. From the experiences, not only did I find my interest in the instrument, I also have learned a new way to find confidants. Today the feeling still remains.

I like the acoustic guitar for its warm natural tone. It emits an emotional quality and its steel strings are the source of the warm feeling. Whenever the fingers pick them, the instrument releases a powerful and comforting tone. Also, the wooden body of the acoustic guitar resonates with the melody played on the strings, generating soft vibrations. It gives an easing and revitalizing power to my body and soul.

I also like the instrument for its great diversity in tone variations. Using various playing techniques, I can create more expressive sounds. For example, by hitting the guitar’s body, I can generate percussive sounds similar to snare drums or bongo drums. Another is tapping on the guitar strings with fingers, which creates rhythms and melodies at the same time. In addition, the scratching of the surface of the instrument’s body can produce the sound of scraping or sanding. Best of all, these techniques can be done simultaneously, creating a vividly colorful melody.

Moreover, the acoustic guitar is light and portable. The instrument only weighs about one to two kilograms. Its average size is less than a fifth of a grand piano, making it playable in places with limited space. For example, when it is not possible to fit a grand piano in an average sized bedroom, one can play an acoustic guitar in there with ease.

The acoustic guitar has opened new passages for me to find more possibilities. Not only did it bring my fantasies into reality, it also helped me find better means to comfort myself and other people. I am really happy that I have found a wonderful lifetime companion.
