A Spiritual Talk—The Personal Experience of the Process of Writing in English

Ding Chang

Whenever I write an English composition, I feel as if my soul talked to myself. I surmise that I know why this happens and one of the reasons may be that I am not a native speaker of English, so when trying to compose, the other voice speaking in Chinese comes out to confront or confound me. And what that voice has done is to ruin my grammar and logic in English. And another reason may be that while composing, my mind is separated from myself, and goes to the garden of Muse to hear the songs, the lyrics, the poems, and the beautiful things in the spiritual world. It just leaves me here sitting in front of the computer screen typing whatever I can steal from that garden, under the captivating eyes of Muse. Perhaps both reasons are delusive or even wrong. I feel somehow my soul is talking to me, because it is eager to talk to somebody. It is lonely, empty, and thirsty for love. All it can feel or touch is me, and only me! Alas! How tragic if I fall in love with my soul but not to others in this world, and how tragic if I don’t love the soul and desire of others in this world!
