The Significance of Learning English

Why should we learn English? When I was in elementary school, I began to learn English. At the beginning, I did not know why I learned English, but growing up I gradually realize the reason: English is a useful and significant language. And English has been playing an important role in my life. As far as I am concerned, English is an important language: it can make us follow the footsteps of the world, it can make us contact different kinds of culture, and it can promote our ability.

First of all, English can make us follow the footsteps of the world. With the global village appearing, English has been an important language in the world. Many countries regard English as their first language. We can see English everywhere—on the street, on the Internet and at the airport. When we look for some information on the Internet, there is much more information in English than in Chinese. When we go to other countries, we use English to talk with other people. If we are not able to understand English, we may miss much information from the world.

Second, English is a bridge that connects us with different kinds of culture. In the global village, there are deep relations among countries. For example, we may see many foreigners in our country; thus, English is a useful tool for communication. And by communicating with people from other countries, we can contact and understand various cultures in the world.

The third reason is that learning English will promote our ability. There are many English tests to certify the proficiency of English learners, such as GEPT, TOEIC, and so on, for our English ability is likely to affect our work, salary, interpersonal relationship, and so on. For example, if we want to socialize with foreigners, we must be good at English speaking. If we want our life to be better, we should enhance our English ability.

In summary, English learning has great impact on us. English can not only make us follow the footsteps of the world and contact different kinds of culture, but also build up our ability. Being one of the members of global village, we must learn English more diligently.
