College Dormitory Curfew

It is very common that school dormitories have curfews. Basically, school dormitories set curfews in order to protect the students, which I think is very good. I was living in the dormitory of our college when I was a freshman. The curfew of our dormitory is 12:00 a.m. However, I disagree that a college dormitory should have curfew based on the following reasons: we college students are able to take responsibilities for ourselves, it is very inconvenient if there is a dormitory curfew, and we don’t have a place to sleep if we miss the curfew.

First, I think we college students are mature enough to take responsibilities for our safety. As I mentioned, the main reason of schools’ setting curfews is to ensure the safety of students. As a result, I can understand a junior high school or a senior high school has a curfew. However, I think a college student is big enough that he or she can decide what time to go back to the dormitory. I also think college is the most important time for us students to learn to take responsibilities for ourselves. So I don’t think setting the dormitory curfew can help safeguard students’ safety.

In addition, it is very inconvenient for the dormitory residents if there is a curfew. College lives are usually rich with activities and events. We have many activities with friends after school. Sometimes, we may hang out with friends overnight. But it is often impossible for the dormitory residents to participate in this kind of activities. We have to catch up with the dormitory curfew. On the other hand, we also get a lot of group homework or presentations. Sometimes, we may have to discuss the group project together overnight. Since I had to go back to the dormitory before 12:00 a.m., I had to leave first. I always felt very sorry to my partners in this situation.

Finally, students have no place to sleep if they miss the curfew. Once one of my friends didn’t catch up with the curfew of our dormitory. She said she didn’t want to bother her friends; therefore, she went to a convenience store. She was very sad because she felt like a homeless person with no place to go. And it is inappropriate and very uncomfortable to sleep in a convenience store. Therefore, she told me not to miss the curfew under any circumstance.

In my opinion, there shouldn’t be a curfew for a college dormitory. It is a person’s freedom to decide what time to go back to the dormitory. If a college sets the curfew for their students, the college deprives them of this freedom of choice. I hope our school can cancel the curfew. In the daytime, the dormitory residents get into the dormitory with their student ID cards. I think it should be a feasible way to admit the dorm residents any time during the night.
