Knowledge Is Like Water

     Knowledge is like water. When the amount of water is small, it is tender and soft like a smooth stream. But when the amount of water is large, it has the tremendous power like a violent current. Knowledge just has this kind of quality. Its fundamental function is to satisfy our curiosity to know the things we want to know. But when we get more advanced knowledge, the knowledge will become powerful and affect many things.

     This quality makes knowledge have two quite different effects. If you use it in the right way, it will produce positive power, such as enriching your life, teaching you to tell right from wrong, and developing the society. However, if you use it in the evil way, it will become a terrible and destroying force. For example, many people who get advanced study don’t use their knowledge to improve their society, but use it to earn money in illegal ways. They use their knowledge to escape the restraint of the laws and search for their private profit. Their misusing of knowledge makes knowledge become a negative power that hinders the development of our society. So when we study, we should know the purpose of getting knowledge, and then we will not misuse it.

     As the saying goes, “Knowledge is the fundamental means of promoting public welfare.” Except for getting knowledge, we should have the sense of responsibility for our society. We should concern about it and devote ourselves to making it better, because we are cultivated by it. Besides, we should be the instructor and paragon of people and help to direct the society. Before doing this, we should keep our behavior suitable and legal. And then knowledge will not be a destroying force but a positive power.

     Knowledge is like water. It has two different kinds of effects that are produced according to the way you use it. In addition to getting more knowledge, we should use it in the right way and then it can produce the good effect.
