How do you control your emotions?

Jane Austen first published Sense and Sensibility in 1811. This work is a romantic fiction which is set in southwest England, London and Kent between 1792 and 1797. The two main characters in sense and sensibility, Elinor and Marianne are sisters, but their personalities are different. Elinor has become closely attached to Edward. However, one day Elinor hears that Edward will marry Lucy. She controls her feelings and does not tell that to her family. Marianne confronts the similar situation. Her lover, Willoughby, will marry a rich woman. Marianne gets lovesick and risks her life. In the end, Elinor proposes to Edward and Marianne marries an old man. The two sisters keep in touch with each other. Although the two bad men Edward and Willoughby are not faithful, I am glad to see the two beautiful sisters have a nice marriage in the end.

Marianne is passionate. She doesn't think before she acts, and she believes that people should be directed by feelings. Marianne falls in love with Willoughby. However, a big strike hits her after Willoughby dumps her brutally. Marianne's "sensibility" represents the kind of literary heroine. These heroines are typically romantic, innocent young girls. In the end, impulsive Marianne comes to realize that her unleashed emotions almost killed her. She tries to bring more practical element into her life.

Elinor always shoots down others’ whimsical urges. "Well, if you consider the facts…" or "That's a nice idea, but…" She is the only one who is willing to hold up a cautionary hand and tells everyone to hold off for a minute. She often thinks about the practicality of a matter. Elinor tends to package up her own feelings and buries them in the back of her mental closet. She loves Edward Ferrars, which is unannounced and unresolved. In fact, Elinor's feelings are some of the deepest in her heart, and she is hurt by Edward's engagement. In the end, Elinor finally talks about her private feelings with her family. She admits her inner pain to Marianne. She is able to tell her feelings to others.

How do you control your emotions, giving vent to your feelings or suppressing them? I was emotional before, but now I learn to control my feelings and think carefully before acting. I admire Elinor for her consideration that controlling her feelings so as not to hurt her family. It is hard to do that. When we feel angry or sad, we want to yell out or cry out. No matter how bad things we confront, we should control our emotions adequately. We cannot vent our anger on other people. We also cannot suppress our feelings; otherwise we might have mental problems.
