The Weather in Taipei and Tainan

Patrice Wang

Recently, it has been raining for several days. I feel that I am going to become moldy. Especially, I need to study at Chinese Culture University that is in Yangming Mountain. The sky is seldom clear in winter. Instead, the weather is either cloudy or rainy here. Contrary to the weather in Taipei, the weather in my hometown Tainan is mostly sunny. There are three differences between the weather in these two cities.

To begin with, the average yearly rainfall in the two cities are different. In Taipei it is about 2180 millimeters and in Tainan it is about 1546 millimeters. Taipei’s rainfall is more than Tainan’s because a strong northeasterly wind causes torrential rain in Taipei. However, there is rain only in monsoon season in Tainan, so it is usually fine and cloudless except in this period of time.

Second, Tainan has only two seasons because it has no distinct spring and fall. People can just feel hot and cold there. And the hot weather is always longer than the cold one. By contrast, in Taipei, people can feel warm, hot, cool, and cold in four seasons. Tainan is close to the equator so that it cannot have four obvious seasons.

Finally, the temperatures in Tainan and Taipei mean that they both have advantages and drawbacks. With the coming of summer, the temperatures will rise quickly in these two cities. Although it is hot in Taipei, Tainan is even hotter and it is also windless. In summer, the average temperature in Tainan is about 31 degrees Celsius but in Taipei it is about 28.3 degrees. On the other hand, it is also cold in winter in Tainan. Nevertheless, it is still warmer than in Taipei. The two cities have different temperatures, and people can choose their more favorable place to live.

According to my analysis, both Taipei and Tainan have their characteristics. And I realize that I prefer Tainan’s weather to Taipei’s because when I am in humid and cold weather, I feel so uncomfortable and depressed. I miss my hometown very much.
