Is University Education Really Necessary?

Nowadays in Taiwan, most high school students plan to go to university after graduation without a second thought. Many parents in Taiwan encourage, sometimes even force their children to go to college even though their children are not willing to. However, knowing that university education is not suitable for everyone, some scholars and researchers started to promote that not only university education, but also other vocational trainings can brighten up students' future. On the other hand, this idea also triggered some people's disagreement upon the university education. They believe that university education is meaningless and useless and dissuade people from pursuing a college degree with some examples like Steve Jobs or Terry Gou, who run successful careers without acquiring any university degree. Is university education really necessary? In my opinion, Yes! There are three reasons to support my standpoint.

First of all, university is a relatively mild and safe place to master one’s professional skill and make mistakes without worrying about dire consequences. Making mistakes is one of the most important steps to get through in order to succeed. Unfortunately, if someone works for an international enterprise making contact with customers around the world, making mistakes will probably get one fired. Apparently, university is the perfect place for youngsters to taste a little bit of what will happen in the workplace without serious consequence.

Even though university degree is rather easy to obtain in our society nowadays, it is still a relatively persuasive indication that someone is well-educated. Compared to the past, entering universities has become easier due to the change of our enrollment system. It is also easier to get a university degree. Despite the decrease of the difficulty, it is still not an easy degree that everyone can acquire without breaking a sweat. In order to graduate from university, four academic years of education are required. By advancing to the next level, one must pass all the exams and hand in all the reports on time in order to get the passing grades. Therefore, university degree is a convincing proof that someone is a well-educated individual.

Another important function of universities is that they provide abundant courses to those who want to acquire knowledge in addition to their specialized field. Most universities consist up to 10 departments, which provide a perfect environment for students to get in touch with different areas of professional knowledge and broaden their horizons without spending too much money.

To sum up, university education is essential for students before they enter the real society. It makes students become more prepared and confident to dive into the society. Although receiving university education is not the only way to prepare one for future, it is a relatively easier way than going through hardships in the real society.
