 Never Give Up

Lynn Jhang

When I was in the senior high school, I took part in an essay competition with my friends. The major theme was disadvantaged minority. Because the family of one of our members suffers from rare illness, we decided to make some research of them. At first, we had no idea about the essay, so teachers helped us build up the skeleton of the essay, and distributed tasks among us. There is little information about Niemann-Pick disease, because this is a rare disorder, so we decided to have an interview with the Wu family. The Wu family has two children, a girl and a little boy. They all had Niemann-Pick disease. Fortunately, we contacted the Wu family swimmingly and had a meeting with them. When we saw the Wu family, I felt astonished because they were very optimistic and kept smiles on their face. Even though their children got this terrible disease, they still faced it. They told us the process of how they discovered their children’s disease and how they changed mood when they faced it. They tried to walk out of the shadow of the disease. They went to a lot of places to look for cure and treatment. For example, they tried many methods, not only western medicine but also traditional Chinese medical science. They already tried their best, but still had little progress on the disease. Finally, they made a tough choice. They decided to let their children take the experimenting medicine. Unexpectedly, this medicine had a little effect! Now, they let their children take this medicine to control the disease, even if one pill cost three thousand NT dollars. But this medicine can only control the condition without curing the disease. They said, "we won’t give up till we die." At this moment, I saw the hope, peace, and happiness in their eyes. After the interview, we gathered the information and completed the essay. Luckily, we won the runner-up. I learned a lot from this experience. I learned not only team spirit, and the importance of health, but also the spirit of try our best, and never give up. That’s what the Wu family taught us.
