How the Internet Changes My Life

Jane Tsao

Nowadays, the Internet has played an important role in our daily life. People can use it for searching information, playing online games, communicating with their clients and colleagues and so on. However, before I went to PCCU, I did not use the Internet that often. As a high school student, I did not have many assignments which need resources from the Internet. Once I entered PCCU, my parents bought me a laptop. It was the time when the Internet truly changed my life and made it much more convenient. Since then, I have been deeply influenced by the Internet on the aspects of getting information, and entertainments, as well as communicating with my family.

Firstly, the Internet is like a tropical rainforest from which I can get abundant information and knowledge. Being a university student, I always have a lot of presentations and homework. I usually go to the library and use the Internet in order to search for materials for my school assignments. I always consider the Internet as my private tutor. I use it for learning English. I visit TED Talks website to listen to a variety of issues. Not only can I sharpen my English listening skills but also learn how to give a presentation. And because there is no TV in the place where I live now, the Internet stands an important place for me to receive news happening every day. I like Yahoo News very much. The reason is many similar topics edited by different editors can be found on the news website. I can compare the news from different news companies. I find out that the details of the facts are sometimes totally different from different sources.

Secondly, the Internet occupies my leisure time. I enjoy browsing the websites. I often buy some clothes and books online. There are two reasons why I like to do online shopping. First, I can receive the products for which I placed the order online in the convenience store. It is very convenient. Second, I can easily compare prices. If I am in a physical store, it is hard to immediately compare the prices of goods from different sellers. In my free time, I enjoy watching movies and soap operas downloaded from the Internet that provides different countries’ videos for free. When I am under a lot of pressure, I also play online games, for example, Tetris and Happy Farm. Owing to the Internet, I can release my pressure and pass my free time with fun.

The last and the most vital is because of the Internet, I have a closer relationship with my family. When I first came to Taipei, I couldn’t adapt to the environment well. I cried every night and I wanted to go back to my hometown, Kaohsiung. My mom then came up with an idea to relieve my homesickness. She taught me how to use Skype. In this way, we could talk everyday face to face, and I felt my mom was around me anytime I need her. My homesickness became less and less. My dad didn’t use Skype; he used Line to communicate with me. In fact, before I came to Taipei, I didn’t know how to talk to my dad. He seemed cold and distant to me then. However, our relationship started getting better when we began to use Line to communicate with each other. My dad sends me cute and lovely stickers, which make me feel he is not as cold and distant as I thought before. My family also creates a Line group where we can share important and interesting things as well as exchange ideas and feelings.

The Internet has brought many advantages to me. It lets me obtain rich information, keeps me amused, and provides me a means to have good interaction with my parents. I cannot imagine what my life would be like if the Internet disappeared from my life.
