Effects of a College Education

Allison Chu

Nowadays, getting a college education becomes a normal and easy thing, but it still affects people a lot. Generally, being more independent, more open-minded and more confirmed about our future are the three biggest effects of a college education, in my opinion.

First, going to college definitely makes students become more independent because when we are in college, we do not need to stick to the fixed class schedule like we used to in high school. We can not only choose our own classes, but also arrange our new life which is full of different events. And the most important thing is that many of us start to live without our family. My roommate in college used to be a girl that did not even know how to do her laundry, but after four years in college, she is now living abroad by herself.

Second, college education makes people become more open-minded. Because we will meet people from not only different cities but also different countries, take many different classes and join a lot of interesting events, these experiences will open our horizons and make us more open-minded to the world. Take another friend of mine as an example. She used to be a person that was scared of everything, and she was really afraid of getting out of her comfort zone, but after she took the advantage of her college’s resources and went to Canada to exchange for half a year, she has become more open-minded and fearless since then.

Third, college education will make us more confirmed about our future. Even though most of us chose our major when we went to college, many of us still were not sure what we really want to do in the future. Meanwhile, colleges offer us time and resources to find out what we really want and like. Take myself as an example. I found out that I am not interested in literature after taking some classes, so I started to choose classes in different departments, and then I found out that I was really into marketing.

In conclusion, being more independent, more open-minded and more confirmed about our future are the three biggest effects of a college education, in my opinion. So if students try their best to enjoy college, college education could be the important thing which would affect them for a lifetime.
