Commuting or Living in the Dormitory

Many people live in the dormitory after they go to college. I commute to school every day because my home is not far away from school. Actually, I feel tired sometimes because I should get up early to go to school. It made me want to sleep in the class. Although living in the home I could get along with family, I believe living in the dormitory can make us become more mature. In my opinion, the benefits of living in the dormitory are being able to arrange our time freely, learning to do financial management, and becoming more independent.

First, we can know new friends quickly and we have more chance to make friends if we live in the school dormitory. In college we might not be able to meet our classmates every day because our curricula may be different. Even if the curriculum is the same, when the class is over, most people just leave immediately. So we do not have much chance to chat and get to know each other. If we live in the dormitory we would meet our classmates every day. And we get familiar with one another better.

Second, we can learn to manage our money if living in the dormitory. At home parents would pay for utilities, internet access, and cable TV; everything is handled properly by family. Contrastively, living in the dormitory we should be concerned about all the expenses, including utilities, cost of food, books, and others. We should pay attention to every detail.

Third, we would become more independent by living in the dormitory. At home parents wash clothes, cook and help us do many things. However, living in the dormitory, we cannot rely on our parents. We must do everything by ourselves. We have to do the laundry, getting food to eat, and deal with all the problems in daily life.

Although both commuting and living in dormitory have advantages, I think living in the dormitory is better for us. It is the time we learn to be independent. In many western countries, children move out to live by themselves when they are old enough. I agree that living in the dormitory can make young people learn to take care of themselves and become more mature.
