The Bad Effect of Living away from Home

Christine Syu

Three years ago, I entered Chinese Culture University. Everything was interesting and fresh to me, such as my classmates, the environments, and my new lifestyle. My friends came from different cities and we all lived in the dormitory away from home. Due to living without the supervision of parents, some bad effects and problems occurred.

The first problem is that I always sleep too late. When I was senior or junior high school student, my parents woke me up every day, and my parents were like my alarm o’clock. But now, I am not living with them, so there is no one to wake me up in the morning. I use alarms every day, but I still sleep too late. There seems to be no solution to change this habit, so I always have to ask my parents to call me or my friends to wake me up. Until now, I can wake up by using alarms gradually.

The second bad effect is I became fatter than before. Living with my parents, I always ate very healthy food. There were vegetables, fish and chicken in every meal, and I didn’t eat too much because my mom very cared about my weight. Now I am living outsides, and I always eat junk food, such as fried chicken, fried onions, hamburgers, etc. They are very unhealthy food.

I was rather passive in studying. Before being a college student, I was like a horse, I moved forward only when I was pushed. I could not study or write homework when I was alone, so my mom would accompany me to study every day. Being a college student and living without my parents' supervision, I should study by myself. It was very difficult for me to concentrate on books when I was a freshman. This situation made me have bad grades.

Living without my parents was a big problem to me. I should change my living habits and do everything by myself. Waking up by myself, concentrating on books, eating healthy food are the things that I should try to do well.
