A Letter to Your Grandchildren: The World Today

Having experienced one-third of my life, I have a lot of reflections on this changeable world which I want to tell you, my dear grandchild. In my twenty years’ life, everything did not go slowly even though I have been imagining our world’s changing for a long time. The transportation development, climate change and technology development are the major concerns in today’s world. Each one has had much influence on us.

In my home town, I have experienced a lot of changes. Although I move to Taipei to study, I still remember that the changes in the past ten years in Kaohsiung. I am just surprised that the world has been changing so quickly. Has my hometown in my memory changed? Am I day dreaming? Have I missed the important part of the change? The fact is that technology has changed our life style. Nowadays, people have high speed rail to substitute the trains, cars and airplanes. Take myself for example. I had to spend four or five hours on the way home five years ago but today I have the new choice by taking the high speed rail. It only takes me ninety minutes to get to Taipei from Kaohsiung. Apparently, our life has become more and more convenient.

The second thing is climate change. Global warming is now the whole world issue. People have consumed a lot of natural resources. We do not comprehend how vital nature is and how lucky we are with those natural resources. It is important to let our grandchildren understand and cherish what they have. Every bit of food or material is God’s reward to us. If we do not save those rich resources, our planet will one day be destroyed by our foolish egoistic motive. Because of our irresponsible acts, the weather has become more and more unpredictable. Our agricultural harvest has been decreasing year by year due to our wasting habits.

The final thing is technology development. The most vital technological innovations these days are computers and cell phones. They have new styles and functions that provide us a lot of convenience and enjoyment. People nowadays have computers or cell phones to help them memorize daily work. The desk-top computer has been made into tablet PC. Because of the above developments, our life and thoughts have become more and more modern.

My child, now you have known what my world is like. The above three things, I think, will give you a better idea about the life I have. It is time for you to have your own life.
