School Rules: Eating in the classroom

 Tina Huang

There are several unwritten manners in school. The simplest and the most arguable issue is if students can eat in the classroom. Teachers say that students cannot eat during the class, especially in junior, senior high schools. Why do they have to set those kinds of rules in particular? Do they have any reasons for such a rule?

Firstly, I would like to share with my own experience in senior high life. Students were asked not to have any food except in the school restaurant, not even a piece of chocolate. Although the rule was not accepted by students, we had to obey it. Otherwise, we would be punished by the school authority. I remember that I ate an ice candy on the stairway and bumped into our course guide, and of course got the warning punishment in my first year in senior high. She even made a phone call to my mum due to this mistake. I was so angry at her for almost the whole semester. For now, I can understand that I didn’t have to be that angry.

The reasons for not eating in the classroom are many. The smell of food is filling the room, and the sounds of eating are distractions for teachers and other students in the classroom. Furthermore, students sometimes do not take the garbage out of the classroom, which dirties the environment. I have to mention that the ten-minute break in the college is definitely not enough for us to buy something to eat. Inevitably, we would miss the learning time.

In conclusion, I mentioned in the previous paragraphs the negative effects of eating in the classroom. I suggest that students have to learn to respect each other from details of life. We cannot command others to do something but should do it from ourselves.
