E-books vs Traditional Books

Victoria Chen

Reading has been one of the most important parts in people’s daily life. Some people tend to use e-books for reading, while others prefer traditional books. As a matter of fact, e-books and traditional books are different in the aspects of convenience, environmental protection and price.

First, e-books are more convenient than traditional books when we go outside. E-books are always stored in a portable electric device such as an iPad, a mobile phone and a Kindle. The device is like a large library where we can store a large quantity of various e-books. When we go travelling, we only need to take our electric device, which will make our trip relaxing and enjoyable. However, traditional books may be burdensome sometimes. If we are going to have a long trip to someplace, we have to carry several books like heavy blocks of coal, which will make our trip full of tiredness.

Second, e-books are more environmentally friendly than traditional books. We read e-books on the electric devices. As long as we charge the batteries of these devices, we can read e-books. Batteries can be recycled so e-books won’t harm environment a lot. On the contrary, traditional books are made of wood. Paper mills cut down a great deal of trees to supply our needs in governments, companies, schools and for daily uses. Paper can be recycled but forests cannot be regenerated in a short time. Some people hold the opinion that the touch of real paper will increase the great experience during the reading process. However, we can’t abandon the whole forest only for a little leaf. Environment is very important to us. Imagine the day we lose all the forests, what will the meanings of great reading experience remain for us?

Third, e-books are cheaper than traditional books. Downloading e-books only cost us the money for a pineapple bun. Once we download an e-book, we can read it on every electric device we log on. The only two things we need are a device and a good spirit. Different from e-books, traditional books are more expensive because the craft of composing type, printing and packing all need time, money and energy. For example, we should pay four dollars for Dubliners in paperback edition, but only one dollar for one in electronic edition. The money we pay for a traditional book can afford us to buy several e-books. On some websites, we can even download some e-books for free.

In conclusion, e-books are more convenient, more environmentally friendly and much cheaper than traditional books. Most of us now live a high-paced life and e-books will bring us a lot of convenience. They will make our life easier and more relaxing. E-books are better than traditional books in many ways and it is time for us to try a new reading form and get more enjoyable reading experience.
