An Impressive Memory of Dancing

Chloris Chen

When I was in elementary school, I learned a lot of lessons after school. Through taking these various lessons, I could find out what I was really interested in or what I was good at. My mother had always told me “you will get what you put in” since I was a little. In fact, I couldn’t really realize the meaning of what she said until I went to the dancing class. I started dancing when I was in the third grade in elementary school. However, I was really influenced by dancing as I was in the fifth grade. I guess I needed to pay first before I got something.

One day, I practiced with other students as usual. Then, Claire, the teacher, came in. She gathered us because she wanted to announce that some of us would represent the school to compete with the student dancers from other schools. I was very excited and anxious about the announcement. I really hoped that I would get this rare chance. Claire started to call the names who were picked out by her. I was so nervous at that time. Claire said, “Amy, Tina, Jenny, Sue, …” I felt bad because Claire didn’t call my name. I tried not to shed tears in the class. Suddenly, a miracle happened. Claire said, “Oh, I miss one. The last one is Chloris.” I was shocked and thrilled that I got the chance. And I told myself that I must do my best for this performance.

We started training soon. Claire used to teach us to relax when dancing. But she told us that she would teach strictly in this class. We must do perfectly as what she taught. I woke up at five-thirty and went to school at six every day. We always did basic practice at first. Then, Claire would make a dance in formation. If someone made a mistake, she always asked us to restart from the beginning. She said we were a team; no matter what happened, we shared joys and sorrows with each other. Thus, we had to dance again and again, day and night. I wanted to give up many times, but I still hung on for it.

The days passed quickly. The competition was coming. All of us were nervous on the way to the competition place. Claire told us to dance as if we were practicing. After arriving, we checked on all the things to make sure they were ready. Before the performance, we sat in a circle on the floor. We cheered each other up. I also told myself that I needed to try my best. And finally it was time for us to get on the stage. While I was on the stage, I couldn’t remember anything. I just moved and danced like a machine. I guessed my body remembered what I should dance when the music came. We danced smoothly from the beginning to the end. At last, we won the competition.

I was very happy that we won the first prize. This feeling was inexpressible. Claire cried and said that she was proud of us. Although we got the first prize, the most important thing was not only that. What was more important, I thought, was the memory. During the process, we had to overcome many difficulties and cooperate with each other. We had to share happiness and sadness just like what Claire said. I really learned a lot. It is indeed an impressive memory of my life.
