We Should Not Allow Students to Use Cellular Phones in Class

Chang Chian-chian

With the recent surge of technology and information, cellular phones have played an important role in our daily life and have apparently become very convenient and cherished companions of most people. We can contact others via these modern devices; however, they have so many disadvantages or pitfalls that I believe students should not use them in class. There are many expensive phones in phone market and students may compare their cell phones with those possessed by others. Students may meet some deceptive information when surfing the Internet by cellular phones. All those disadvantages will worsen students’ life. The first reason for my objection for students to use the cell phones in class is that these handy machines exercise a malign influence on students’ studies. They may spend too much time on games, ringing with friends, and surfing the Internet. They like to ring for a terribly long time with even friends whom they met not so long ago. It is a waste of the precious time which should be devoted to studies. Cellular phones have many exciting games and the access to the Internet, so student are always addicted to them and easily are distracted from their studies. The second reason is the ever increasing cost paid for the cell phones. As more and more deluxe phones are invented, some parents may have to pay highly to buy them for their children. Students will compete with their classmates in owning the most fashionable products. It is never good to compare themselves with others, especially when most students are not mature enough to grow with sound mental health. The third and final reason is that some illegal swindler may flood defraud information to cellular phone users like the students who are not aware of the possible deception. For instance, those swindlers may tell students that they win a jackpot or their parent is sick to cheat them. The swindling out of the cell phones is on the rise and the number of student users of cell phones who are being cheated has been on the rise, too. Although cellular phones are convenient, they are not in favor of students’ concentration on their studies. They may waste their time, make an unhealthy mentality, and provide some misleading information or unpleasant experience for them. I therefore strongly urge that we should not allow students to use cellular phones in class.
