Why I Come to Taiwan

Jen Peng

Due to certain reasons, Taiwan is kind of mysterious and inaccessible for people in the mainland. I am not sure whether people in Taiwan have the same feelings when it comes to Mainland China as how mainland people feel when they refer to Taiwan. I was really excited when I was told that I had an opportunity to Taiwan. I could study in the college in Taiwan, I may experience the differences in climate and lifestyle, and I could enjoy the extreme beauty Taiwan has.

Firstly, I come to Taiwan for studying. I am still a college student and I get this opportunity for exchange study. It has been said for many years that there is something wrong with the education in Mainland China. But I have been used to it. So I come to Taiwan, hoping to experience some different styles of education. I wonder how the teachers teach in the class. Do students like their teachers’ style of teaching? Is there a good relationship between them? And what are the differences between the teachers in Taiwan and Mainland China? I am curious about the answers to these questions. So I have decided firmly to come to Taiwan.

Secondly, I come here for experiencing a different lifestyle. I am from the northwest of China that is totally different from Taiwan, which is located in the southeast of China. My hometown once was one of the main cities on Silk Road, where the weather was dry and sandy. But Taiwan has a humid climate with quite incredibly beautiful scenery. In addition, differences exist not only in environment but also in people’s daily life, just as the saying “Different places cultivate different people.” There are different habits in clothing and food in these two places. As a person who has been tired of the northern wind and sand, I long to feel the southern rivers and trees. When I am annoyed with the steamed stuffed bun as my breakfast in the north, I’d like to try sandwiches or something else in the south. So I come to Taiwan for experiencing different vistas and another way of life.

Finally, I have been attracted by Taiwan’s beauty. The geographical place of Taiwan and the people she cultivates make her as beautiful as a goddess. There are a lot of national parks which are pretty impressive. There are plenty of old streets that could bring people to good old days. And there are also many night markets that can satisfy people’s stomach. I cannot resist the temptation of Taiwan, so I come.

It is my desire for learning, my longing for another way of life and my yielding to its beauty that make me come to Taiwan. It is no exaggeration to say that after I have spent half a year in Taiwan I have fallen in love deeply with this island. And I figure even after I go back to the Mainland, I may miss the days in Taiwan.
