What Makes a Good Government Leader?

When you hear the word “leader,” what comes to your mind? Is it someone who motivates people to achieve high levels of performance? Is it someone who stays calm during challenging situations?

In my opinion, being in a position of authority doesn’t mean one is a good leader. And what makes a good government leader? My definition of a good government leader are the two essential qualities as discussed below.

The first essential quality of a good leader is his/her earnest eagerness to serve the motherland and the people. The Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Carrie Lam, is a very bad example and she is definitely not a good leader in Hong Kong. Recently, she decided to use a thousand billion Hong Kong Dollars to build an artificial island to solve the overpopulation problem in Hong Kong. It was an unreasonable and irresponsible move, because every day she let 150 people from Mainland China move into Hong Kong and let them use our public resources, such as our medical and housing resources. We Hong Kong people cannot even afford to buy our own houses! Also, the mainlanders can cut the line for renting the public housing that Hong Kong people have been waiting for almost 10 years.

The second essential quality of good leaders is their being not afraid to do the dirty work even though they know that many people may want to bring them down. In my opinion, Donald Trump, the President of the United States of America, is an example of a good government leader. He has the perspective to see that the overpopulation and the poverty problems in America are the result of the immigration policy. Therefore, he decided to send the immigrants back to their motherland no matter how many voices opposing him. He even built a border wall between the US and Mexico to stop the Mexican stowaway. Although people may say he is inhuman, he is doing all good for America and his people. And he is doing the work just like what is promoted in his campaign slogan—"Make America Great Again.”

Being a good government leader is not an easy job. A good government leader has to look beyond the day to day trivia and see the big picture. It requires the strongest will to lead the citizens. And a good government leader cannot be afraid to do the thankless job. Otherwise, a community or maybe a nation might fall on a bad governor’s hands.
