Marine Pollution

Abby Yeh

Many marine lives are endangered. For example, the number of sea turtles and Chinese white dolphins are decreasing, coral is bleaching and so on. What causes those problems? The answer is ocean pollution.

We should face ocean pollution seriously because the pollution affects marine lives a lot, and actually, we are the culprits who make the pollution happen. Many humans’ activities cause ocean pollution. For example, the oil, which leaks out from the vessel, floats in the sea and heavy metal and waste water flow from plants into the sea, and the garbage on the beach also follows the waves into the sea.

It is hard to imagine that our behavior makes such a big impact until we see the reports about these things. Recently, there is a video showing that a scientist team spent nearly 10 minutes removing a straw from the nostrils of a sea turtle. In the video, the sea turtle was so painful that it struggled constantly and the blood was bleeding from its nostrils. When the video was broadcast, everyone was shocked and it made people realize the importance of the marine conservation. In fact, there were many cases like this in the past, and there were numerous sea animals being hurt or threatened by the ocean pollution.

However, the good news is that people’s environmental awareness is stronger than before. Besides the decree of the government, some people create good ways to reduce the pollution. The following are a few examples. First, people hold the activity to clean the garbage on the beach. Second, an invention named Seabin showed up. Seabin was invented by two Australian surfers. It can not only collect the floating garbage, but also effectively remove the sea oil and cleaners, so that pollution does not spread to a wider area. The last example is the design of foldable paper-straw. It was designed by a student who studied at Taiwan University of Science and Technology. It is different from traditional plastic straw and it is made of paper, so it can be recycled and it will not damage the ecological environment of nature.

The ocean is the greatest gift of the Earth. If we do not reduce the pollution, those pollutants will still eventually influence the food chain. Many marine lives will be harmed or poisoned and humans’ lives will be threatened due to the lack of resources from the ocean. Thus, we should reduce pollution and protect the environment we live in and make the Earth a better place to live.
