What is the Strawberry Generation?

Shawn Huang

As we know, strawberry is a kind of fruit. But if we use strawberries to describe people, what would it mean? I heard the phrase “strawberry generation” long time ago. The term is only used in Taiwan. The strawberry generation refers to young people especially who were born between 1981 to1991. They grow up in a protected environment and they are unable to endure hardship and huge pressure from studying or working. Some people say they are insubordinate, selfish, spoiled, arrogant, and sluggish in work because of the environment they live in. They are just like strawberries which are easy to get hurt and bruise.

Young generation is now in an easy and comfortable society. Most of them are protected carefully by their parents since they were born. So many parents overly spoil their children, and allow them to do everything they want. The phenomenon leads them to rely on their parents so much. When they grow up and enter the society, they can’t endure the pressure even just a trivial matter and they give up easily when they meet challenge. Not to mention when they work, they may be lazy about the work. These are the most common features of strawberry generation. Some people also use “pudding” or “tofu” to describe them. I think both of them are interesting. And they seem appropriate.

The common characteristics of strawberry generation are selfishness, arrogance, unsteadiness, etc. Lots of young people look down on other people and they always think they are right on anything they do. They are so selfish because they are spoiled by their parents. Their parents give anything they want so it’s hard for them to share things with others, even their good friends. I think some of my friends are this kind of people. Strawberry generation seems to have lots of bad sides and weaknesses.

I agree with the term strawberry generation, and this term is really appropriate to describe some young people. They have fresh and bright surface but they get hurt easily. I think I used to be one of the strawberry generations. I have some of the characteristics. I think more and more young people are trying to wipe off the term strawberry generation imposed on them, so they are brave in anything they do and try to cope with pressure. They are not as weak as a strawberry.
