An Incident of My Family

Pamela Shen

The relations between my mother and my grandma have been strained since I could remember. However, there were only a few times of quarrels that broke out between them because neither of them is an irritable or rude person.Of all the incidents involving them, my grandma’s wiping at my mother’s dog Karenin with her walking stick last winter is the most memorable one for me.

It was early in a cold Sunday morning and my whole family was still in the bed. Suddenly, I heard my grandma’s footfalls as she was stumbling climbing the stairs which led to my parents’ bedroom. I felt strange at first because my grandma seldom came to the second floor of our home for her legs were weak. Then I heard her angry voice. She said, “What a stupid dog! Look what it has done!” At the same time, Karenin, who slept with my parents upstairs, woke up immediately for hearing the voice of my grandma, and rushed towards her in great delight. Unfortunately, Karenin didn't notice that there was a stick held in my grandma’s hand. My grandma lifted the walking stick, and gave Karenin several hard hits. Karenin was totally unprepared for this. Howling sorely, it ran towards its cage which was on the balcony of the first floor.

My mother had seen everything but did not say a single word. But I could feel she was almost crying. She rushed to the balcony on the first floor to see whether Karenin was all right. However, Karenin hid deeply in its cage and its eyes glittered with hate. My mother’s eyes were teary.I knew she was heartbroken because she loved Karenin so much and she’d never let anybody hurt it.

Then, my father found out that Karenin had shit in my grandma’s bedroom in the midnight, which could be the direct cause of the anger of my grandma. Karenin had done this sometimes when anyone treated it badly. We all know that Karenin wasonly the scapegoat in the war between my mother and my grandma. My grandma hit Karenin because she was dissatisfied with her daughter-in-law. My mother squatted beside Karenin’s cage and tried her best to coax it out. She sulked and said, “You stupid little dog, running so happily and undefensively towards the people who would hit you.” On the other side, my grandma locked herself in her bedroom, neglecting my father’s propitiation.

A few days later, Karenin forgot about anything and played with everybody, including my grandma, with a light heart. However, the relationship between my mother and grandma could only become worse and worse after the incident.
