A Letter to My Grandchildren

Rex Jason ”R.J.” Kung

Dear grandson,

You are 20 years old now, and I am writing to you to tell you what my life was like in the 2010s when I was in my 20s, so you can compare it with your life. I am also writing it because I thought you may find it interesting to read about the past.

At first, I remember I was a secretary of English department Association at that time. The reason why I am telling you this is because I want to let you know joining some student club would make your college life fantastic. You can learn much from each activity because it is not just an event that you have gained nothing at all after it ends. There were lots of difficulties facing me, including the heavy task from the association, family, schoolwork and even the problem of tender passion. Thus, time management is extremely important in my college life. Even though I was in low spirits, I remained calm in the face of any peril. I want every task to be well done and that is my duty too. Ever since I was little, I have been instructed to look on the bright side of things. Therefore, I would not shirk from difficulties. In reality, escaping problems worsens the situation. To me, attending the student organization is an instructive experiment and I really hope that you can join similar kind of organization when you are in college.

Secondary, it is the time for you to decide what you want to do in the future. The future is bound to be a pretty cool place overall and parents would not always be with you and they may leave you eventually. To learn how to become independent is absolutely significant. As for a man fresh from school, wealth and fame are not important and what is of importance is your goals and diligence.

Last but not least, all I want to say is that I expect you can do something worthy and meaningful. Do not waste four years of university life. In a nutshell, where there's a will there's a way. I am convinced that success will fall on people who take things step by step. I wish you will keep the adage in mind, “One who has never tasted what is bitter does not know what is sweet.”

Say hello to your mom and dad.

May God bless you all.

Grandpa R.J.
