Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore how elementary school English teachers in Taipei area introduce the English language to elementary students and to compare and contrast their method with Whole Language Approach, which is currently prevalent in the US elementary schools. Subjects were students from four classes of different grades in a suburban Taipei elementary school which has a reputable English program. Data analysis was based on classroom observation notes, video-tape transcripts, and an interview transcript. The findings suggest that the students learn better when the class proceeds in an interactive and dynamic manner, and that EFL educators and practitioners should take the difference in learning environment into account when applying Whole Language Approach into the educational context of Taiwan.
