The Benefits of a Part-time Job

Do you have a part-time job? If you ask many college students this question, the answer must be yes, as students in college have much more time than in high school, and they also have curiosity to experience the part-time job which is different from study in school. But some students do not just try different experiences but also earn the living expenditure. For me, I am the one who has to work to pay my rent and the cost of living. Although the pressure always pushes me to work hard, I have gained three main benefits from working part time: modifying personal attitude, managing finances, and improving interpersonal communication.

The first challenge for me when I work is I have to constantly modify my attitude toward work and people. Being a waitress in a restaurant, I must follow any order, such as cooking, preparing food, and selling the dishes. Everything has to be done fast and clearly, which is hard work for me. Believing that I can complete my trial, I make a list for improving my work efficiency, by reminding myself if I make mistakes or get praise on work. Then I find out that I overcome myself and become a better worker.

The second hard thing is to manage my finances. Actually I am a poor manager in finances. At first, I will count how much I earn in every month. And then I save my money in the post office. That is quite a simple and easy way to save my money. With more money earned, I should find an investment to increase my wage. Thus, I divide my wage into three parts: one quarter is saved in the post office, one quarter is used to pay an insurance policy and one half is for the cost of living. With that I can easily save money.

The last advantage of a part-time job is improving interpersonal communication. I am a shy girl especially uncomfortable while facing guys. On my job I have to sell the dishes, which means I have to face the customers. It is the hardest thing for me to accomplish my job but I believe I can complete the mission. I try not to see the customers as a person. I see them as numbers, foods, the idols, and anything else that makes me more comfortable and smoothly.

The part-time job makes me learn many things. And I find out that I am more mature than when I was a freshman. I will think twice before doing anything. I am more patient and tolerant with studies and work. Doing part-time jobs is not a bad idea in college time.
