To Be an Independent Girl

Sasha Hsu

I had been a dependent person because I was the youngest child in my family. My parents always dealt with everything for me. So I used to rely on somebody to do something for me. However, the situation changed after I entered the university.

At first, I was glad to leave home because I got freedom; I could go anywhere and do anything. I was very happy that I had chosen a school which was far from my hometown. But problems soon emerged. I was anxious about housework that I had no one to help me to do. I had to wash clothes, clean the floor, and wash dishes by myself.

Then I found another problem that I had never had. I couldn’t sleep well alone because I used to sleep with my sister. It was tougher than the problem of housework; it made me unable to get up early so I was often late for school. It was the most difficult problem that I had to overcome.

What’s worse, no one could take me to see a doctor when I was sick. Once I got a high fever, but I had to take care of myself, and I had to buy dinner for myself. Sometimes I felt dizzy when I took a shower; I was afraid I would faint in my bathroom, and nobody would take me to the hospital in time. It seems unsafe to live alone.

Although it is not convenient to live alone, it makes me learn how to solve problems by myself, and become an independent girl. I wish I could do better and overcome difficult problems in life.
