Large Breed Dogs or Small Breed Dogs

      I love animals, especially the dog. My family keeps a dog–Milu in my hometown. Because I have to study in Taipei, I leave my pet dog far away in Yun Lin. I had asked my parents to let me bring her with me. But they didn’t agree so I decided to keep my own pet dog. One thing that perplexes me is what kind of the dogs I should keep— a large breed dog or a small breed dog?    

      The first thing that came to my mind is the space for my pet dog. If we want your dogs to be healthy, we have to give them enough space for exercise. A space of 144 or 180 square feet is enough for a small dog. If we give the same space to the large breed dog, it will feel very painful. A large breed dog needs a large space like a backyard, or a garden.

      The second reason is about the interaction. I love to run to catch my dog, mount her and give her a big hug. Sometimes I also play Frisbee with her. If I keep a small breed dog, I can’t play with it like playing with Milu.

      Money is also a big problem. Compared with the small breed dog, the big one obviously needs more money on feed. The pet grooming and medication is also an expensive part.

      The last reason is also the most practical reason— convenience. Now I study in Taipei. I don’t have any car or motorcycle. The traffic of Taipeibuilds around the MRT station, the train station and the bus routes. These transportation means do not accommodate a dog unless it is carried in a box. Up to now, I have never heard of carrying a large breed dog in a box on some public transportation.

      If I have to consider the space, interaction with my dog, money and convenience, I can only keep a small breed dog. But I still like the large breed dog very much so I think I will keep a large breed dog after I get married.
