Three Types of College Courses

     Colleges have many different kinds of courses. Each course can provide us important knowledge and make us learn a lot. There are three fundamental types of college courses, including the general courses, the elective courses and the required courses.

      The first type of college course is the general course. In my opinion, the general course is good for students to develop multi-dimensional perspectives. For example, the general courses include courses such as chemistry, humanities, social science courses, and human affairs courses. In the English department, we have to take three areas of general courses. We should take two courses in science, two courses in social science, and two courses in human affairs. The general courses are not useful for me. A lot of content in the general courses has been taught in the high school. So I think the courses waste a little of my time. I also think they are not necessary for college students.

     The second type of college course is the elective course. The elective courses are very useful for me in the future. The English department provides many different kinds of elective courses, for instance, Business English, Comparative Syntax: English and Chinese, and Guided Reading. I do like Business English because I have learned many things about English in business. Now, I can write a formal business letter to clients and know some business terminology. I think Business English course is very useful when I go into the workplace.

     The third type of college course is the required course. The required courses are very important for college students. A required course is a basic course. Required courses can improve our fundamental abilities. English writing ability is significant for English majors. And the writing course is essential for the students to develop proficient English writing ability. The writing teacher gives me suggestions and helps me revise my compositions to improve my writing skills. Now when I write an English letter, I will not make many mistakes of grammar and I do not need to worry about being misunderstood or causing embarrassment to myself.

     Among these three types of courses, I like the required courses the most because the courses like English writing course can let me develop the basic language abilities to meet the challenge in studying and communication, and I will have better skills in English to find a more satisfactory job in the future.
