Why Do People Become Vegetarians?

More and more studies and evidence show the healthiest diet is to eat more vegetant food and less animal meat, especially less high fat food. People become vegetarians with different motives. Some want to have a healthier lifestyle or body, some are against being cruel to animals, and some want to save the Earth.

The first and the most common reason that people become vegetarians are for health reasons. With advances of time, rapid development of new technologies, and civilized way of life, people become more and more aware of the importance of having a healthier body. Eating meat can be bad and also increase the risk of heart disease. Many studies found vegetarian diets are helpful in preventing or reversing heart disease and reducing the risk of cancer. Also, vegetarians usually have less weight problem.

The second reason is to prevent cruelty toward animals. Many vegetarians give up meat because they don’t want to hurt animals. Animals raised for slaughter have a miserable life. These animals stay in a small cage and theycan barely move in their entire life. They are drugged to get fatten and grow faster. Those animals are treated really badly and horribly.

Another reason that some people choose to become a vegetarian is to save the Earth. The meat industry is one of the sources of global warming. A study reveals that the meat industry produces more greenhouse gases than all the cars in the world do. Eating vegetables also saves more land, energy and water. That’s because livestock eat more food than they produce as meat. Raising livestock needs to use land to grow the grain to feed them and water to grow the grain and to water the animals.

Being a vegetarian has many benefits; however, you don’t really need to give up meat completely. I think eating the fish and the animals from wild places where they have a free life will be better than eating breed meats. In this reason we can still have meat but without torturing animals and save more natural resources. If we can do something to make our body and the place we live in better, why wouldn’t we do it?
