Smoking Should Be Banned

Jerry Chou

Cigarettes have been around for hundreds of years and there are still a lot people who smoke cigarettes. The reason why people smoke is that they are addicted to nicotine and it relieves their stress. The smokers only care about themselves because they are affecting the non-smokers while enjoying their smoke. Smoking cigarettes should be banned because the smoker faces health problems, their appearances are changed, and smoking affects others.

Smoking cigarettes causes lots of health problems such as lung damage and fertility problems. Smoking cigarettes affects lung health because a person breathes in not only nicotine but also a variety of additional chemicals. It can also cause infertility for both sexes. For males, smoking affects the quality of the sperm and the risk of erectile dysfunction. For females, smoking can affect pregnancy and the developing fetus. According to American Society for Reproductive Medicine, male smokers can suffer decreased sperm quality with lower counts of sperm, motility, and increased numbers of abnormally shaped sperm. Smoking might also decrease the sperm’s ability to fertilize eggs. As for females, chemicals in cigarette smoke speed up the loss rate of eggs. Unfortunately, once the eggs die off, they cannot regenerate or be replaced. This means that menopause occurs 1 to 4 years earlier in women who smoke. Smoking affects a person’s fertility heavily and a smoker may have difficulty giving birth to a healthy baby.

Smoking cigarettes changes the smoker’s appearance, causing hair loss and balding. Smoking cigarettes can affect a person's skin. A person who smokes may experience premature aging and wrinkled skin. Smoking can cause the hair and clothes to smell of tobacco. A scientific study was done on men in Taiwan to see if smoking was associated with hair loss. The researchers found that the smokers who smoked more than 20 cigarettes per day were more than twice as likely to have moderate or severe hair loss than people who never smoked. In brief, smoking can change the smoker’s appearance and cause hair loss; if we don’t want to look like a middle-aged person at a young age, we should not smoke.

The most important reason why smoking should be banned is that it affects the non-smokers. Secondhand smoke has significant health effects on family members, friends, and coworkers. According to American Lung Association, secondhand smoke causes approximately 7,330 deaths from lung cancer and 33,950 deaths from heart disease each year. Between 1964 and 2014, 2.5 million people died from the exposure to secondhand smoke in America. The damaging effect of secondhand smoke cannot be

taken lightly.

Smoking should be banned because it not only harms the smokers but also affects people who don’t smoke. Smokers may have freedom to smoke but they should be responsible for their secondhand smoke because it is selfish of them to enjoy their smoke while inflicting the non-smokers around them. Smoking may relieve stress, but it is only for a short term of time and the smokers will start to regret once they get serious health problems as a result of smoking.
