Reasons for a University Student to Take a Part-Time Job

In the past, university and college students used to give priority to their study to prepare for their future career. Nevertheless, many students choose to take part-time jobs while studying nowadays. I have been working as a teaching assistant in a cram school since I was a freshman. I found that there are a lot of advantages by taking a part-time job. And there are three reasons that I decided to work part-time while studying in the university; they are earning money, gaining working experience and spending free time.

First of all, the main cause I take a part-time job is to earn pocket money and living expenses. I have to pay not only tuition fee and living expenses but also accommodation fee since I am an overseas student. Compared to Malaysia, the living expenses in Taiwan are higher. Additionally, my brother is also studying in Taiwan too and my parents have to pay for two people's expenses. Therefore, I thought I could lighten my parents’ burden by working part time. In addition, I can save some pocket money, buy something I want and also buy some presents for my parents for their birthday.

In addition, I can gain working experience by taking the part-time job which is closely relevant to my working field in future. I have acquired teaching skills and also communicating skills these years. Besides, I have also developed my independence and I have been a responsible person who has taken charge of financial problems. Above all, I can list out my working experiences and those qualifications on my resume to show my capability. Therefore, the prospective employers may pay more attention to me and I am likely to win preferable evaluation in the interview.

Furthermore, I want to spend my free time more meaningfully instead of wasting time in the dorm all day long. Before I went to work, I found myself so bored when I had no assignments to do. I could merely watch dramas otherwise hang on the social network most of the time. Sometimes I would hang out with friends too, but it cost a lot and I felt I was extremely extravagant. After some careful consideration, I decided to look for a part-time job to spend my free time. After being a teaching assistant, I am able to manage my time more wisely. I must manage my time more carefully to allocate time for my schoolwork. The part-time job reminds me not to waste time on meaningless things and to appreciate every moment.

In conclusion, students taking a part-time job can gain benefits if they can supervise their time wisely. They can not only earn pocket money but also experience social life in advance. Many young people cannot bear the working pressure and suffer a lot in the working environment. Taking part-time jobs can give students a chance to have an internship in a company. And students are able to develop their work competence and increase their life experiences.
