A Letter to Your Grandchildren: The World Today

Valerie Huang

My dear grandchildren, I want to let you know what the world is like in my generation. There may be a lot of differences between your generation and mine. People who live in the 21st century like to use the Internet to get in touch with others. Transportations became more and more convenient and varied. The last thing that has changed a lot is education. Education is very important in this era. The way of teaching is quite different from before.

The more developed technology is, the more convenient our life. Especially the invention of the Internet has turned the whole world into a small country. Even a person who lives in a country far away from Taiwan, by using the Internet he or she is just like a neighbor. That is why we created a new word “global village.” A side effect of the Internet is the sternly cold human society. People are getting used to contacting others by the Internet instead of meeting face to face. In addition, the Internet may have been used in crimes. The cybercrime is prevailing over the world. That is an issue which needs much attention.

Transportation is changing with each passing day. For example, cars, motorcycles, airplanes, and the MRT are common transportations. Among these transportations, motorcycles still play an important part in Taiwan’s society. It is popular because of the low cost of purchase and convenience in parking or storage. High speed rail is another trendy transportation these days. It is faster than ordinary trains. Therefore, it is very popular with travelers or business people. The last one and also the most common transportation is the MRT. It is cheaper but it is limited to the urban areas. The government is planning to build an MRT system which is connected with rural areas. After completing the system, traveling around Taiwan in one day is nothing impossible.

The last one I want to talk about is education. Going to school is a duty, and also a right. Everyone has the chance to study. Owning a high school degree was already good enough in the past. However, in my generation, most people can have a chance to get a college degree. A higher education background can help us get a proper job and receive more respect from others. The core idea of education is to teach students in accordance with their aptitude. Bringing the professional specialty into full play can make the world better.

The world has changed in many ways. I am sure that when it is your generation the world must be more varied and graceful. Sometimes I will imagine the world afterwards. I want to know what the difference between my generation and yours is. In conclusion, no matter how the world has changed, just remember never cause damage to our environment.
