       In the United States, the most popular weapon is the pistol. As it is easy to carry, hide, and shoot, no matter in law enforcement or military use, people love to use it. Even for self-defense, a handgun is still the best choice. To know the particular functions of different types of pistols, I classify firearm into three general categories. They are revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, and machine pistols.   

      The first type of pistol is the revolvers. The well-known pistol appears in the movie of the western cowboy. A classical image is the shooter’s turning of cylinder and being ready to fire. In the earlier century, revolvers were used by military men and law enforcement personnel, but now, it is out of the combat. Because it has very low capacity of bullet and is extremely slow to reload, it is hard to use it to beat the modern enemy. The price of revolvers is cheap, and the simplicity of structure makes it easy to keep and maintain. Nowadays, although revolvers are replaced by modern pistols, they are still popular with off-duty police and the shooting sport athletes. The Smith &Wilson, a United States manufacturer of pistols, produces some great models in the world. The revolver series include S&W M10, M29, and M500.    

      The second type is semi-automatic pistols, which is the major type of pistols. It has large magazine capacity. Some models even can load 100 rounds drum magazine. Besides, it is very fast to reload the magazine with this type of pistols. This is a great advantage of semi-auto pistols. What is more, it is much more accurate than revolvers. The most famous semi-auto pistols are the Glock 17 of Austria, the Colt M1911 of the USA, the TT-33 of Soviet Union, the Beretta M9 of Italy, and the SIG SAUER P226 of Switzerland. The Glock 17, in my opinion, is the best semi-auto pistol now in the world. Over 65 percent of policemen and soldiers carry this type of handgun in the USA. And around the globe, the Glock 17 remains the top choice of pistols. MPSSC, the Military Police Special Services Company in Taiwan, uses the Glock 17 as well.

      The third type is machine pistols (MP), a full-automatic pistol. It is like a small submachine gun. Basically, the structure of MP is the same as that of semi-auto pistols. The MP only adds some special components inside the semi-auto pistols. However, not every semi-auto pistol can be changed into MP style. The well-known models of MP include the Glock 18, the Beretta M93R, the H&K VP70 and MP7, the CZ75, the MAC-10, the Luger pistol, and the Uzi pistol. The MP is illegal to sell to the ordinary people in the USA, as they are small but deadly weapons.

      In conclusion, with the models I have mentioned above, the pistol can be divided into three general types: revolvers, semi-auto pistols, and machine pistols. In the near future, we will probably see the new generation of pistols. It may become much lighter, stronger and safer than the present models. Despite the different functions of pistols, all the handguns are fatal. Therefore, it’s important that they be owned by the right people and handled carefully.
