Three Types of Learning Attitudes of College Students

Annie Lee

The enrollment rate of colleges in Taiwan has changed greatly these years. Almost every high school student may get college admission as long as they attend the entrance exam. Even though 90 percent of students are in the school, they have different reasons and goals to attend college, which in turn affects their attitude toward learning.

The first type of students enters the department which they are really interested in. Students in this type might want to be more professional of what they have learnt. For example, students who have been learning ballet will do their best to enter the dancing department because they want to be a great ballerina in the future. This kind of student will concentrate in every lesson, take notes and practice right away when they get home. Of course there are some exceptions in this type; some students do behave in every class they take even though the department is not on their wish list.

The second type of students knows how important the college degree is. Students in this type usually don’t know what they are learning, but because of the stress to graduate, they play hard and also work hard. They might cut the class, go out for fun, play on their phones, sleep, and talk to their friends during class time, but they won’t ruin their midterms or final tests. This kind of students will ask for notes from their friends or even get some information from their professors. No matter how difficult it is to catch up, they will find a way.

The last type is those who think that university is for fun. This kind of students doesn’t care which department they are in, because they are not interested in any. They seldom come to school or we might say they never. Students in this type come to college to make friends. Even though the professors try their best to help them concentrate on their school work,  they never really listen. Most of these students give up learning. Sometimes in the middle of the semester, some students drop out of school, and some just vanish so that we never know where they are going to go.

I’m the second type of student. I really enjoy coming to school not only to learn, but also to join school clubs and make friends. I thought I was the first type when I was in the entrance interview, but I found out later that this was not the department which I was looking for. I prefer application English instead of literature. The courses in this department seem to be hard for me because I have no idea of the deep meaning implied in many literary works. Even though I have little interest in the courses offered in this department, I still work hard on my exams.
