My Favorite Types of Novels

Olaf Tang

As the proverb says, “A book is like a garden carried in the pocket.” And I have gotten into the habit of reading novels. When I feel lonesome, I would dig into this fictitious world to escape the reality. Horror, romance and motivational novels are the three types of fiction that I am fond of.

Horror novels are also called Gothic novels, and they always bring the audience a dreadful atmosphere. The tense pace lets me feel excited and be eager to figure out what will happen in the following chapter, for instance, Frankenstein. It was about an insane scientist who desired to invent a creature with corpses. Finally, he succeeded. But he realized that he made a serious mistake, so he tried to eliminate the creature. At the end of the story, the monster repented its crimes and killed itself by jumping out of the window.

Romance novels are often adapted for movies, and they tug at the heartstrings of every audience. For example, Twilight is the famous romance novel with several sequels. Bella, the female character, falls in love with Edward, who is a vampire. Due to their different races, their marriage couldn’t be admitted by their families. Overcoming a lot of adversity, they lead a rosy life and have a happy ending. The plot is so moving that I can’t help reading all the series of the novels within one week.

In my mind, the first rank type is motivational novels. When I feel listless, I would like to read them which can give me courage to go on. For instance, The Catcher in the Rye is regarded as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. Although the main character was notorious for cursing all the time, he eventually found his identity in the end. The quote blows me away: “Life is a game that one plays by the rules.”

Reading novels can not only broaden our horizons, but also let us realize the morals behind the fiction. We can develop our imagination and glean sensible insights by perusing the novels. Hence, reading novels is an excellent hobby and it can benefit me in many aspects.
