A Fulfilling University Life

Nancy Lee

Most people will imagine what they will be like in the college, so do I. I was dreaming of what my university life would be like all the time. Who is that girl holding copies of textbooks and a cup of latte of Starbucks in her hand, chatting joyfully with her friends on the campus? It is me absolutely! I am attending my ideal university because of my favorite courses, making many friends, and joining colorful extracurricular activities.

For my part, I would love to major in English because I take a profound interest in this foreign language and gain a great sense of achievement from it. Besides, I am looking forward to the course about Greek myths. For instance, “The Golden Apple” is my favorite story which talks about a competitive beauty contest among three authoritative goddesses--Hera, the Queen of all gods, Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and Aphrodite, the graceful goddess of love. William Shakespeare, my favorite playwright, whose comedies and tragedies really influenced me. From his masterpieces, I knew that the love of Romeo and Juliet was over the hatred between the two clans. In addition to the literature, the four abilities of English cannot be underrated. The Achilles' heel of me is speaking, especially in front of the crowd. However, through innumerable practices, such as giving a report to everyone and reciting English on the platform, I have learned how to overcome my fear. I devote every effort to deal with each task and try my best to do it well. Last but not least, I hope I am qualified to be one of the candidates of going abroad for further study in my golden four-year college life, even just for one year. It can be beneficial and meaningful to me to improve my English proficiency and get to know foreign cultures.

In addition to doing my best on the academic performance, I cannot overlook the importance of interpersonal relationship. The difference between senior high school and college is that people in the university are from different places or even countries. It is not easy to get along with people from different places. I used to be too introverted to adapt to an unknown locality and get along with strangers. Making friends with them will be a challenge for me; yet, I choose to treat them heartily and enthusiastically. This is a good chance for me to learn how to adapt myself to an unknown locality. Fortunately, my classmates are open-minded and vivacious; for instance, we study and discuss the assignments, go window shopping, and talk about something depressing, irritating, or funny. I am glad that I have made some good friends in the university.

Most importantly, the extracurricular activities—the clubs in my leisure time are indispensable: they have changed my school life greatly because I got many friends and memories by participating the activities. Taking part in a club is not a bad idea. My choice was the Student Association of English Department, and I stood out for myself to run for the president of the association. Most of my friends were astonished at my decision, including me! I commuted and got two part-time jobs, and I have only twenty-four hours. I am the kind of person who as long as makes up her mind doing something, she must do her most; I got a landslip finally. It was really a challenge for me because I never knew how to manage a club. I only took part in the activities as a participant one year before. But I have to plan them all by myself now! I spent most of my summer vacation in the school preparing the four-day training for my partners. On the training camp, I got a lot of touching, shocking, and valuable experiences. When the school started, my partners and I focused on the freshmen; we held camping, uniform party, and Christmas party for them to have a colorful life in the university. I got the chance to lead others; I would rather discuss and negotiate with them than making them obey me reluctantly. I regarded them as my indispensable companions, not subordinates. Others can condemn or frame me up, but they are unable to hurt my partners. I will give service to the students of English Department with all my heart in the year to come.

Being a university student is a vital stage for me. In my point of view, the life of university symbolizes that I am responsible for my own behavior and choice. Also, I need to strike a balance between studying and relaxation because this is what a student should do. I will never let my time and youth elapse easily. Well goes the saying, “Actions speak louder than words.” No matter what difficulties lie ahead of me in the near future, I will try my best to conquer them and fulfill my dream.
