Double Majors

Joe Su

Students in college always put their energy on the only major that they are interested in, but I choose a different way to experience my life of college. In my personal opinion, university is my last step of education before entering society. For this reason, I have to prepare anything to deal with challenge form jobs. When I was a freshman, I considered that my English major was not enough to satisfy my desire for knowledge. I decided to take another major, international trade, to satisfy my wish. But it turns out to be just a beginning of a nightmare.

In the beginning, I suffered from those required courses because they were total strange to me. It meant that I had to pay much more attention than other classmates and spend much time for preparing midterm exams and final exams. I sacrificed my time for watching television, movies, and playing computer games in order to study until understanding those difficult subjects. Because the courses like economics, accounting, and statistics are essential for business, I had to realize the mathematical questions in those courses.

When I had double majors in my life of university, I had to make time to study both English and international trade. This would be a challenge to me because I was used to doing things without any plan. My motto is “JUST DO IT,’’ which means I can’t make a good use of time. Therefore, I have to learn how to allocate my time efficiently among different courses, otherwise, I won’t be able to handle every course in my limited time. On the other hand, I would get more time to deal with my hobby of reading.

I can learn much more knowledge than other classmates in the same class because of the double majors. I am not constrained by my specialized major “English’’; I possess another major ‘‘international trade’’ to do finance work. I am flexible for various kinds of work and positions; I will have more choices in selecting my job after graduating from university.

In the end, I want to say that double majors could make students learn lots of things which they have never touched before. But it is also hard for students who can’t concentrate their attention on studying. If they haven’t enough passion for learning, double majors will become their nightmare at the midterm exam and the final exam. I had to prepare double or triple subjects for exams within one week. Could you imagine how strong the pressure was on me to push me to study. In that week, I couldn’t have enough time to sleep. A double major is like a two-edge sword. Although we can use it to win more trophies, we can be destroyed by it. I think the decision I made has made a difference in my life of university.
