What is the Strawberry Generation?

Evan Chuang

What is the Strawberry Generation? It refers to the people who were born in 1980~1990s.The fruit strawberry grows up in the green house. It is sweet, tender, but fragile. When referred to a group of people, they have the characteristics of having low pressure resistance, being overprotected by parents, and paying too much attention to possessions.

The Strawberry Generation has low resistance to pressure. John, one of my coworkers when I worked at the swimming pool as a lifeguard, is a good example of such type of person. One day, our supervisor asked us to clean the toilet and shower rooms. After that, John resigned the job. I asked him why he quit the job. He responded that his mother cleaned his room and toilet, and he never did them. I was surprised to hear that. I think John has low resistance to pressure. Actually, our supervisor just asked us to do a small thing. But he quit his job for that. Obviously, he cannot bear the stress very well.

The parents of the Strawberry Generation have protected them too much. Amy, who is one of my high school classmates, never does any part time jobs. I asked her why she did not do some part-time jobs to earn some pocket money. She responded that her father would give her money when she needed it, so she did not need to do part time jobs. In my opinion, having some job experience is an advantageous thing for students. If I were a boss, I would hire a person who has some job experience, because an experienced worker knows better to do a job well. So I think young people should have some job experience. It is good for them in the future.

The Strawberry Generation pay too much attention to their possessions. The Strawberry Generation usually use the products which have a brand name. Hanna is one of my study tour friends. She always bought Chanel products when we traveled in Europe. She bought dresses, pants, even slippers from the Chanel flagship store. It is incredible. Her father must be an enviably rich man so that she can possess a lot of brand name products.

There is no doubt that the Strawberry Generation will be spreading in the future. Whether you blame it on the lazy young people themselves or their parents, we must attach importance to this issue. I think we can use education to change their mentality and help them develop their strength and resilience.
