Should College Students Cohabit

It is easy to fall in love, but it is difficult to get along. Half of the lovers think that cohabitation is the important procedure before marrying. The trial marriage is getting more and more popular in Taiwan. A lot of students think that they can’t know whether their mate is their Mr. (Ms.) Right without cohabiting. However, is it helpful to marriage? I think that college students should not live together before they get married.

First, many college students think that it is worthy to live together. It is cheaper for two persons to live together. However, the cohabitants sell out their moral standards, virginity, and purity. Therefore, the majority of cohabitants break up eventually and their economics is obviously not a matter. So why do they start living together?

Second, though the cohabitants don’t have pressure of marriage, they are less happy than general lovers actually. Statistics show that the melancholy rate among female cohabitants is five times as high as the married women. Some experts indicate that psychological disease is caused by a lack of a sense of security.

The last, some students think that cohabiting won’t hurt anyone. But a lot of people are hurt deeply when they break up, either psychologically or physically. Love is not a reason for premarital sex. Their feelings can trick them. And frankly speaking, sex confuses everything. It makes them feel as if they were actually in love. To make things worse, they may get sexual diseases from the unusual relationship. Also, their parents may get hurt. They don’t want their children to cohabit for intense emotion.

To be short, the key factor to living together until old age is responsibility and commitment. Research has shown that the divorce rate of cohabitants is twice as high as general couples. Cohabitants lack commitment to their relationship. I think college students are too young to cohabit.
