My Two Working Experiences

Tiffany Chen

I didn’t have any working experience until I entered university. Last year, I went to apply for a job as a waitress in a restaurant and I worked there for almost two months. Meanwhile, I also got another job as a babysitter. My aunt just asked me for help to take care of her boss’s children on weekends. My job as a waitress was very different from my job as a babysitter in the aspect of the working environment, the skill required, and the amount of payment.

First of all, the jobs differed in the working environment. The environment of the restaurant I worked in was quite small and crowded. There were only twenty seats in the store, and the aisle was narrow too. Therefore, it was difficult for me to serve customers. During meal time, there were many costumers inside and the environment became very noisy. Besides, this restaurant had an open kitchen, so customers could hear the noise when the cook was cooking. Even the sound of washing dishes could also be heard. By contrast, the working environment for my baby-sitter job was very comfortable and spacious. I just had to go to the house of my aunt’s boss and accompanied the two kids, and luckily they were very cute and obedient. Therefore, the environment was quite pleasant because these two kids never cried.

The jobs also differed in the skill I was required. As a waitress, good observation and high EQ were necessary. I should observe the surrounding anytime for there were many things for me to do. Besides, it was likely that I met bad customers. When meeting this kind of unreasonable customers, I had to handle it by myself. In fact, I used to be an impatient person, but since I had some experiences of dealing with bad customers, I had become a patient person. I have learned how to calm down and meet customers’ needs instead of getting angry. By this, I have learned emotion management. And even if I felt angry then, I didn’t show it on my face. The job also required quick reaction. I usually needed to respond to customers’ requests immediately. On the other hand, as a baby sitter, I needed to know how to coax children and taught them the right things. Sometimes the kids wanted to play video games and did not want to do homework, and my duty was coaxing them instead of scolding them I needed to use a tender way to teach the kids to what they should do and should not do.

Finally, the jobs differed in the amount of payment. As a waitress, I had lots of things to handle, such as serving customers, cleaning tables, marking orders and so on. It was really hard work for me. And after I got off work, I often felt exhausted. This job offered me one hundred and thirty per hour, and I worked three days a week. Actually, I was not satisfied with the wage at all, so I quitted after I worked there for almost two months. However, the payment for being a babysitter was rather satisfactory. The parents of the two kids treated me very well and they gave me one thousand each day. My working hour wasn’t over four hours, and the content of this job was much easier than that as a waitress. And if I worked until midnight, I got extra money to go home by taxi. All in all, This job was a very good memory for me.

After comparing the two jobs, I found out I am not suitable to do the labor job. But both of these two jobs offered me valuable experiences, and I learned a lot from them.Next time, I will find a job which I am interested in, and not only enjoy it but also learn some useful things from it.
