My Part-time Job in a Beverage Shop

Mimo Yeh

My first part-time job is in a well-known beverage shop, which has lasted for over a year. I have realized a few things since I learn everything from scratch. I have got to know that every occupation requires professional skills and what matters is not the amount of salary or pay I get but having the right attitude as well as making considerable effort.

First of all, I’ve heard that working in a beverage shop is not that easy; thus whether I am capable of shouldering the heavy workload is a definite concern for me. On my first day of work in the beverage shop, I got a list of items about how to prepare ingredients and then one of senior employees showed me the process in the kitchen. For example, tea is the element of our products. Each bottle has its certain amount of water and grams of tea leaves. To make the best drinks, a bottle of good tea plays a vital role. The time of simmering tea is also an important procedure, which cannot be too long or too short.

After I got familiar with the work in the kitchen, I started to learn some knowledge about our products and the making process. First, the manager taught me the process of making each drink and the change of sugar levels on a piece of paper. After I am accustomed to the process and the rules, the manager began to demonstrate the whole process to me so that I could put what I learned into practice. After I have learned about most of the work, I started to take the tests about these professional skills regularly each month, like my other colleagues. To meet the customers’ varieties of needs, we have to make some adjustments to the amount of ice and tea in the Shake, varying with the size of the drink, the amount of ice and sweetness. To assure accuracy of our skills, the company holds the tests for us on a monthly basis.

As an employee, I have never realized my lack of ambition until I learn that one’s attitude determines his or her altitude. It is important that we get along with colleagues and cultivate tactic understanding between each other. Then I work hard to practice for becoming the helper of my colleagues. Since we hope to offer the best service, we always do our best to respond to the customers. We have to show our spirit and passion when treating customers. To meet the requirements of ourselves, we make each drink with great care. With the reminding of the manager and the colleague, I changed my attitude toward the work gradually. At first, I thought that I just finished my work on the list. Now I realize that we cannot just finish it as a routine. Rather, we should improve it all the time.

No one knows how much effort I have contributed to do my job well. Most people consider working in a beverage shop an easy job, mistaking it as grunt work with no knowledge or skills required. We not only pay our labor but also do our best for offering good products to customers. To present a good product, we make a detailed management on the ingredients and the making process. For instance, the most appropriate temperature of tea, not higher or lower, is the key to making the best drinks. Nothing will be perfect except by revising the rules again and again. We always have a discussion forum once a month for correcting the mistakes we made.

Without keeping moving forward, jobs are just labor work, with insignificant reward we get. If people aim high without being modest and right learning attitude, they are likely to fail, even with the pettiest thing. The best lesson I learn from this job is no matter how many things I need to learn, I will keep doing my best in the future.
