Scuba Diving or Swimming

Jerry Zhou

Scuba diving and swimming are two totally different sports. Scuba diving is a sport in which I swim in the ocean with special breathing equipment, while swimming is an individual or a team sport that requires the use of my arms and legs to move the body through water. On the other hand, scuba diving is a leisure sport and swimming can be a competitive sport. The contexts for activities are different too. These are the reasons why I enjoy scuba diving more than swimming.

The first difference between scuba diving and swimming is how we define these two sports. Basically, scuba diving is a leisure sport in which I wear different kinds of equipment in the ocean to see all sorts of creatures and plants. However, swimming can be a competitive sport because the goal of competitive swimming is to break personal or world records while beating competitors in any given event.

The second difference is the scenery I got to see is completely different. In the ocean I got to see all kinds of sea creatures, corals, plants and shipwrecks. The most interesting thing I have seen underwater was a bunch of sea turtles swimming together. As for swimming in the swimming pool I only got to see the plain floor underwater. The only difference the pools may have are in their length, shape, and depth.

The third difference is the activities I got to do were entirely different. When I went diving I had a fun time either with the people I dove with or with the creatures in the ocean. However, in the swimming pool it depends on whether the pool is indoors or outdoors because normally indoor pools have lane lines, and thus I couldn’t really do anything else but swim. As for outdoor pools like the private pools and the pools at the hotels that we normally go when we are on vacation, which is where I got to chat with friends and sometimes play volleyball in the pool.

So, these are the differences between scuba diving and swimming. I prefer scuba diving over swimming because of all the different aspects I mentioned above and I really hope that I can go scuba diving again in the future with my friends and family.
