Why Video Games Are Popular

Video games, a new kind of entertainment invented after televisions became common in the society, are getting more and more popular these days. Most people have the experience of playing video games. But why are video games getting more and more popular among all ages of people?

First of all, there are different kinds of video games for different people. Beside the already widespread video game genre like FPS (first person shooter) such as Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Overwatch, or MOBA games (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) such as League of Legends and Dota 2, some minor video game genres such as music games and brainstorming video games both get quite some reputation among gamers.

In addition to the variety, it also varies in level of difficulty, which can also appeal to different people. Games such as Counter Strike have steep learning curves which can be enjoyed by both casual players and professional players. Professional players play games to compete against each other, even playing in championships or tournaments for winning money. They take playing video games as their jobs; playing video games is what they do for a living. On the other hand, playing video games is a good way to release stress. Casual players play video games for fun and to interact with others through games.

Another reason is that video games are still being innovated over time because both gamers and developers are willing to invest in them. The seventh generation of video game consoles (normally refers to three video game consoles: WII, PS3, and Xbox360) introduced the idea of "motion control gaming," meaning one can play games by using one's entire body, an idea that made the WII a huge success, and brought the idea of immersive gaming. This trend was later carried on to the eighth generation (mostly referring to PS4 and Xbox One) by introducing two new ideas of immersive gaming, one being VR (virtual reality), the other one being AR (augmented reality). The problem of these two ways of gaming is that both of them are still in early development, which causes the control to be tedious and one-dimensional, not even counting the fact that these two ways of gaming are way too expensive for what they can offer at the moment. Still, gamers and developers are still willing to give them a shot for what they believe is the way video games should be innovated.

In conclusion, there are reasons behind the ever-increasing popularity of video games. Different aspects of video games can attract different kinds of people, eventually causing the phenomenal pervasiveness of video games. No matter if one's trying to become a professional player or just trying to have fun and relax, there are always different spots for different people.
